Landowners promote, together with stewardship entities, collaboration mechanisms to achieve a positive environmental, cultural, economic and social impact in their territory.
The landowners or land title holders and the stewardship entities are the authors of the agreement that voluntarily commits both parties to achieve a common goal: to protect, conserve and restore, if possible, natural heritage and biodiversity.
In Spain, 73 % of the agreements are located on private land, according to data obtained in the 6th Inventory of land stewardship initiatives. This highlights how land stewardship is closely linked to private conservation mechanisms. Private land accounts for 48 % of the land under land stewardship and also occupies the first position with 280,000 hectares.
As for the options offered in the inventory to define public space, they are public property and public domain, since the assets and rights that make up the heritage of public administrations can be in the public domain and in the private domain (or patrimonial).
In line with this, 15% of the agreements have been registered in public ownership, 4% in public domain and another 4% in communal ownership.
