International

Strengthening participation in international stewardship networks is one of the priority objectives of the Land Stewardship Platform.

Working on the basis of agreements to promote nature conservation and create networks of similar initiatives is a faculty that flourishes in all kinds of communities and countries.

In fact, international relations and collaborations have been part of the Land Stewardship Platform’s activity since its beginnings, with the co-organisation of events and participation in LIFE Programme projects.

One of the goals of the PCT Strategy 2023-2027 is to internationally project the activity and trajectory of land stewardship in Spain and achieve internationalisation in the group’s training, exchange, and activity by participating in international stewardship networks.

Under this framework, an international review of innovation in private stewardship and conservation has been carried out based on a pre-selection of countries and organisations of special interest, which has allowed us to identify some inspiring or even replicable tools and initiatives:

On the other hand, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has in recent years supported several resolutions and publications on protected areas under private protection. In parallel, at the 14th Convention of the Members of the Convention on Biological Diversity, participants adopted a definition of other effective area-based conservation measures (OECAs), which can be managed with different objectives, but must achieve effective conservation results. These figures give greater value and recognition to land stewardship figures within the global system of protected areas and OMECs.

It is important to highlight the work done to incorporate land stewardship in the field of private conservation at an international level. On the web Privately protected areas and land stewardship you can find interesting resources, such as this handbook that compiles the latest advances in these conservation modalities.

European Network

The role of the Land Stewardship Platform in the development of a European network is very active. It is expected to continue in the coming years, technically supporting the process and working with various organisations in the preparation of future projects on stewardship at the European level.

In addition, the Platform has participated in the drafting of the Barcelona Declaration, signed by a wide range of people and organisations involved in nature conservation, including the Land Stewardship Platform, in order to establish the basis for contributing to the future development of stewardship at both European and national level.
